Our week of learning - PYP7

This was a busy week for PYP7 – with assemblies, bazaar performance practice and finishing off bazaar items.

In Language we have used the week to consolidate our punctuation work from throughout the term.  Maths this week has been all about geometry – with each class working on plotting shapes on coordinate grids. Our Unit of Inquiry this week has centred on making PSAs (Public Service Announcements) that allow our schoolmates to benefit from our study into conflict resolution.

Check out some these photos from the week’s excitement:

Our week of learning - PYP7

This week saw us continue our look at play-scripts, with scripts being written with character descriptions, spoken lines and stage directions. We also had an opportunity to perform Readers theatre. Readers Theatre is a dramatic presentation of a written work in a script form. Readers read from a "script" and reading parts are divided among the readers. No memorization, costumes, blocking, or special lighting is needed.

In Maths this week we have revisited our fractions skill of finding a common denominator. This time we are using it to add and subtract fractions. Our answers have been expressed as improper fractions and so we need to be able to convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers.

In our Unit of Inquiry, we have been exploring conflicts within St Francis, with the aim of taking action to solve these issues around the school. We have used thinking routines to consider the information we have collected and we are ready to spring into action.

Unit of Inquiry

Our week of learning - PYP7

Another week of learning has been completed, full of meaningful inquiry.

Maths this week saw Omega and Sigma classes host the Mexican Exchange students. We introduced aspects of our Unit of Inquiry and looked at sales figures for weapons around the world. Using our excellent written maths skills, we were able to look at and compare sales between countries and see how much countries spend on weapons and how much it would cost for an aircraft carrier and fighter jets!

In Language, we have been looking at settings and making a start on writing play scripts. This is a useful skill, with two PYP7 assemblies coming up - Beta and Omega!

Our Unit of Inquiry into conflict has centred around research this week, with each class looking at examples of conflicts that interest us and examining the cause of the conflicts. We are also working towards real action to resolve conflict at St. Francis, with each class beginning to examine what types of conflicts are present in our school.

This week we have Parent Teacher Meeting. Please remember to book a time with your child's teacher through youcanbookme.

Our language learning last week centred around the genre of recount texts: A Recount is a text which retells events or experiences in the past. Its purpose is either to inform or to entertain the audience. We used images of conflict for inspiration and we were able to use our imaginations to retell events.

In Maths, we have been completing our statistics learning, with data being presented and read in a variety of ways.

Our classroom inquiry into conflict has continued strongly this past week. We have examined types of conflict, with Rwanda and Apartheid in South Africa being our focus. We have also used well-known fairy tales as a way of examining the needs and wants of people in conflict.

A major component for this unit is the skill of conflict resolution - a useful skill we carry with us our whole lives. This skill will be developed as we move our way through the unit, and referenced for the remainder of PYP7.

Our week of learning – PYP7

Our week of learning – PYP7

This was a transition week for PYP7, with each class finishing up our unit on materials and starting a new and exciting unit on conflict.

In Language we have been wrapping up our unit 2 objectives, with each class applying the units learning in both fiction and non-fiction writing – and in-depth interaction with texts taking place as part of our readers workshop.

Halloween in PYP7 Sigma

Unit 2 Maths is currently being wrapped up, with us exploring shape and statistics. In shape we are exploring the properties of shape  - symmetry and angles. Our statistics learning centres on presenting and reading data in various ways.

Tuning in at PYP7 Beta

Our new Unit of Inquiry kicked off this week with each class tuning in to levels of prior knowledge. This included: gallery walks to provoke current knowledge, game playing to stir emotions of conflict and discussion around conflict – based on our previous ‘Build your own country’ work.

Our learning - The week beginning Monday 24th October, 2016

In Language this past week we have visited two genres, the first of these is concrete poetry. We examined imagery and how to use it to produce effective poetry. We also looked at explanation texts, one of the ways we have been presenting information in PYP7.

In Maths, we have been completing our Unit 2 objectives, including ordering fractions, decimals, multiplication and division.

As part of our Unit lessons, we have spent time this last week reflecting upon the effectiveness of the materials used. Some of the work is now on display in the hall at Jardim Europa. Check it out while you can!

We have been wrapping up our final days of Unit 2, with the classes finishing their own experiments using the scientific method. We had mixed results with some of the experiments, however we were able to reflect on whether our tests were fair.
