Watch as PYP 7 grow as researchers!

We continue to explore our central idea -

The way societies organise themselves can affect people in different ways.

Last week, we were finding out and sorting through the governments of Saudi Arabia, Iran, and China. What a task! After much discussion and clarification, students were able to identify how the form, function and responsibility of these governments helps to distribute power throughout these societies. Way to go PYP 7!

Additionally, students worked on strengthening their ability to create their own research questions, acquire knowledge and understand new information independently.

Questions from our classes-
How does the Saudi government make laws? Gabriel, PYP 7 Beta
Do Chinese people react to bad government choices? João Pedro, PYP 7 Sigma
Is there the right to free speech in communist countries? Alex - PYP 7 Omega

Next week, watch out for a rubric created by students that will help them self-assess their ability to cooperate while building their own countries.

PYP 7 Omega getting ready too build their own country.

In Maths, we continued our work on addition and subtraction as well as on prime numbers, multiples and factors.

Our Language text is persuasion and students are working through the features as they write a balanced text on the pros and cons of democracy. Have a look at the sentence starters we have been working with. Finally, during our writer’s workshop they continue to become independent writers as well as passionate readers.

We look forward to seeing you at the goal setting meetings this week.

Discovering Democracies

Last week Unit lessons saw PYP7 research an example of a democracy – Canada! Each student answered questions based on our Key Concepts to guide their research:

Form - What is the Canadian government like? (Structure - roles, responsibilities, rights, hierarchy/decisions, power)

Function - How does a bill become a law? How do Canadians choose their government?

Responsibility - What is the responsibility of the Canadian government? What is the responsibility of Canadian citizens?

Students used summarising skills to create the ‘gist’ of each of these concepts.

This week will look at other systems of government and students will need to demonstrate more independence to complete their research.

In Maths it was a week of addition and subtraction – with students using both mental and written methods for solutions.

Our prior knowledge of partitioning was used to add and subtract on number lines and students were also able to use the column method to allow for personal preference.

This week is all about special numbers: prime numbers, factors and multiples.

Predicting and summarising skills were developed in Language lessons – through the story:  The King’s Choice.

These skills are helping to develop independence and cooperation our Reciprocal Reading lessons.

This week will develop the skill of note taking in helping to write a balanced argument.

Our first week of Unit!

Unit 1 begins!

Last week marked the start of our first Unit of inquiry. We began with engaging clips and thinking routines to provoke students into thinking about the central idea.

The way societies organise themselves can affect people in different ways.

Big idea right?

We tuned in to what they know by unpacking the concept of community as well as by examining how the rights of a person in a particular society directly affect their responsibilities. We did this using mind maps and flowcharts. Our students have been sharing interesting ideas and posing meaningful questions since!

This week we will find out about the Canadian Democracy as well as other forms of organisation.  Also, students will begin to work on strengthening their research and thinking skills.

In Maths we began with place value and comparing and ordering whole and decimal numbers. All lessons begin with a mental starter, and always include group and independent work. They’ve been busy working on their growth mindsets in Maths!

In Language we have been setting up a writer’s workshop in class where students can work on a set task, reading strategies and responses, or becoming confident and independent writers. It has been a learning experience for us all!

This week we will dive into predictions, summarising texts in just 20 words, and persuasive writing.

We look forward to an exciting, engaging and inspiring week!

Welcome to PYP 7

Welcome to PYP 7!

First of all, PYP 7 teachers and assistants would like to welcome pupils and parents to PYP 7 at St Francis College and in particular to the PYP 7 blog, which is a digital portal through which you will be able to keep up to date and informed about what is happening in the classroom.

Our blog posts will predominately focus on the learning that pupils have been undertaking in the previous week and may also provide information into what is in store for the coming week. Our blog will contain pictures from all three PYP 7 classrooms (PYP 7 Omega and Sigma in Jardim Europa and PYP 7 Beta in Pinheiros) and will also include homework activities (note that pupils will be provided with their homework in class – this is just an extra resource for when children are absent or for parents to access when needed).

On Wednesday, the school opened its doors to welcome parents and we would like to thank those who came to meet their children’s new teachers in person and get an overview of the year ahead.

On Thursday, in much anticipation, pupils returned!  In Jardim Europe, PYP 7 pupils were extremely excited to find out which class they would be in and of course keen to find out which classmates they would be spending the next year with. Teaching staff were well prepared for the day, as they had already been back for a couple of weeks ensuring that the school was ready and to make sure that those holiday cobwebs were firmly dusted off.

Over the course of the next couple of days, teachers modelled their own inquiry cycle into the pupils they would be working with for the next academic year. Having spent time over the previous week ‘tuning in’ by checking pass on records with examples of work from PYP 6 and meeting previous teachers, teachers were ready to start ‘finding out’ all about their pupils themselves. There were many opportunities for the children to express their interests, what motivates them, the strengths and weakness and their personal targets for the year ahead.

Pupils and teachers also worked on creating vital Classroom Agreements and putting in place clear procedures and routines which will provide the strong foundations into creating a positive and hard working learning environment, in which we hope al pupils are given the opportunity to develop and flourish to the best of their ability.

Finally, we hope our blog will be a useful resource and we welcome any feedback on how we can improve and better its content. So please do not hesitate in contacting teachers to let us know how we can use the blog to further strengthen our communication.

Reminder: Please bring in Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) authorisations, as pupils will only be allowed to use their devices once the school has received this document. Dismissal authorisations with ID copies also need to be updated.
