Week 2 - climatic and geographical features
A Summary of Week 2
Last week students had an opportunity to investigate into the 3 major climate zones: polar, temperate and tropical with specific focus on sunlight, temperature, humidity, rain and wind in each region. Students worked together in small groups as they discussed and evaluated useful facts that would help them understand how these climate factors influence and behave in each zone. A lot of research was involved and a lot of questions were asked!

We moved on to major landforms and worked in large group to describe, represent, and discover how they were formed. We also found numerous interesting facts about landforms around the world. This engagement helped us reflect on our research skills and to think about our strengths and weaknesses as a group as well as individually.
In Maths, we worked on data handling with specific focus on plotting and interpreting various graphs. Students also had opportunities to practice their mental Maths skills.

This week, PYP 7 will be preparing for the student led conference and inquiring further into climatic and geographical conditions.

This week's homework
Unit 5
PYP 7 begins a new Unit of inquiry
Central idea:
Humans have adapted to a wide range of climatic and geographical conditions in order to survive.
Lines of inquiry:
• The range of geographical and climatic conditions and their causes.
• How humans have adapted and settled in different environments.
• How human development affects the environment
Last week we introduced our new central idea and lines of inquiry. We began with a lively provocation where students had an opportunity to research about an extreme climate and come up with a list of 5 items that they would need if they were to go there. This provocation stimulated a lot of conversation connected to our central idea and lead to several meaningful questions that we will use throughout the coming weeks. We then moved to unpacking the concept of adaptation and students shared their prior knowledge, opinions and ideas. We were amazed with their awareness and experience with the concept. Later on in the week, we began investigating features of maps together with climate zones. This week students will continue to investigate into climatic factors that occur in different climate zones.

In Language, students wrote texts of their choice that were linked to the central idea. They experimented with Haiku poetry and developing their settings, expanded noun phrases and prefixes. Students continue to work on their stamina when writing, their ability to edit texts independently, and their own personal targets.
Last week was fulfilling and rich with learning opportunities. Way to go PYP 7!
Keep on asking those questions!

A look at last week!
Unit 4 comes to an end!
Last week students had the opportunity to apply their understanding of the central idea and lines of inquiry and create a communication tool that could be used in the future. Students were both enthusiastic and reflective when designing their communication tools.
During the summative, students also demonstrated their understanding of the key concepts: change, responsibility and connection as well as their ability to apply the features of an explanation text when creating a user guide for their tool. Their communication tools were diverse, ambitious and useful. Please see google classroom for more images leading up to the summative assessment. But for now, here are a few images that should spark your interest!

Last week was also Book Week and PYP 7 participated in a lot of exciting activities. Parents read stories, we watched a presentation from SUPPA, we took part in special activities during the afternoons with other primary teachers, and dressed up as our favourite adventure book characters. It was a blast! See the highlights below.

We look forward to an exciting week ahead. We are beginning a new Unit of inquiry and we will be tuning in to what your child already knows. Be sure to ask them about the new unit!

Review of Week 4 of Unit of Inquiry
Central Idea: Technology has altered ways of communicating causing new responsibilities to evolve.
Last week, the fourth week of our unit, pupils analysed and discussed key questions regarding the concept of ‘digital citizenship’. The questions we looked at were:
- What is personal when you are online?
- What is private when you are online?
- How do you decide what you should post
The pupils proved to have a very clear understanding of their online responsibilities and what behaviours are appropriate when we give information online or post anything.
Having spent the previous weeks looking back into the history of communication technology and also observing the current technology, whilst doing activities such making timelines of communication technology over the centuries, then building devices from the past; this week we started to imagine what may exist in the future. The pupils were proposed with the challenging of imagining, designing and creating models of what types of technological devices we will be using in the future.
