PYP 7 Omega putting the finishing touches to the Sutori presentation
Last week, the third week of our unit, pupils presented research, that they had worked on the previous week, which was based on a particular device or communication tool and looking at how it has developed over time. Pupils used on an online timeline programme called Sutori to present their research.

Before presenting their research, pupils come up with some do and don’ts to help them clearly understand what is required to make a good presentation. As is often practiced throughout the school, pupils make a rubric, enabling them to see where they are and instructs them the next stage to work towards. A pupil made rubric is a very useful tool for pupils to self and peer evaluate. Below is PYP 7 Sigma’s rubric.

Week 2 of Unit of Inquiry

Week 2 of Unit of Inquiry
Central Idea: Technology has altered ways of communicating causing new responsibilities to evolve.

Last week, the second full week of our unit, provided opportunities for pupils to start researching some of their own personal interests - deepening their knowledge by researching a particular communication advance from the past, based on the communication technology timelines that we did in the first week.

There was a wide variety of subjects chosen by pupils. Of course, many of the children wanted to know more about the communication tools that they are familiar with such as Facebook and Apple, however, many pupils dug deeper into the past. Some groups wanted to know about the creation of the telephone and it various guises over the last 100 years. Having spun some vinyl records in our provocation, some groups wanted know how music storage has developed.
PYP 7 Beta researching their chosen communication technology advance.

A few reminders to keep an eye out for this week! There will be class photos taken and on Friday PYP 7 Jd. Europa will be having out Bake Sale, so please be prepared to help out at home, so that everything is ready for Friday.

Thank for your support,
PYP 7 Team

In our first full week back in school pupils and teachers got fully immersed in the new unit. The pupils took part in a number of provocational activities to create discussion and reveal pupil interests and existing knowledge under the broad heading of communication and technology.

After considering what they had experienced in provocations, such as when we looked at a variety of old technological devices, pupils examined the Central Idea of the unit and came up with questions to guide them towards their inquiries which they will make later in the unit.

In the activity pictured below, pupils created a wide range of questions and had to categorise these questions on either side of the horizontal line into questions that (a. above the line) they care deeply about investigating and (b) below the line, care very little about investigating. And then placing their questions on either side of the vertical line into questions that (to the left) not likely to generate engagement, insight, creative action, deep understanding and new possibilities and (to the right) very likely to generate engagement, insight, creative action, deep understanding and new possibilities.
