Week 6 - Unit 6

Our last full week of school

What an incredible last week!

As well as PYP 7 classes finishing up inquiry into culture, we were busy celebrating a fantastic year together.

We filmed our own music video(keep an eye out for our great moves!), we watched a movie in our pyjamas (Paddington Bear is from Peru!) and had a final assembly(Congrats to Falcons!).

We have some days of reflection left and the Festa Junina. Check out some of the pictures from this busy time:

See you after the holidays!

Wow! What a busy week.

Last week focused on our inquiry into different religions. We visited a Catholic church, as well as a Buddist temple. Check out some of the photos from these trips!

We have also been gathering information on a biography for family members. Thanks to all those who gave their time to be interviewed!

On Thursday we had the opportunity to see Exhibition at St Nicholas School. We were impressed by their hard work and reflected on the tasks that await us next year.

This week saw PYP 7 students collect and organise data from families about marriages. Thank you to all the families who allowed us insight into your marriage! We used our Unit of Inquiry lessons to organise and present data in a variety of ways. We also allowed students to reflect and consider issues within culture that interest them - allowing students to guide this Unit in any direction they wish.

In Language lessons, we are looking at features of (auto)biographies, with an aim to write our own. Our current reading focus is inference - you can support a PYP 7 student by asking them to consider information they have inferred from texts!

Week 1 of our final unit!

Week 1 of our final unit

This has been a busy week for PYP7 students.

In Unit of Inquiry, each student was able to show off their understanding of the Central Idea from Unit 5. We were presented with a scenario - a doomsday scenario - involving flooding and global warming in Rio de Janeiro. This allowed us to demonstrate our understanding of how humans adapt to climatic and geographical conditions. It was a fun and scary(considering the impact of climate change) activity all at the same time. We have also moved on to our new unit - Unit 6. This is all about culture. Our first activity is based on marriages - be prepared to answer questions about marriage!

In Language we revised how best to show all of our learning in writing texts and reading comprehension.

In Mathematics lessons this week, each class has been working on various skills from Unit 5, including addition and subtraction, converting mixed numbers to improper fractions, rounding and using the 24-hour clock.

Week 6

Going further and making conclusions together!

Last week students were in the going further and making conclusions phases of the inquiry cycle. Here’s a little explanation about the happenings in each class.

In PYP 7 B, students used their research to create non-chronological texts and actual models of a Bedouin shelter in the Sahara desert, an igloo in the Arctic zone, a traditional home in Norway, and finally an earthquake proof building in Japan. Check out our pictures!

We also had an opportunity to carry out investigations related to our third line of inquiry: How human development affects the environment.  As students presented their research, they began to make conclusions regarding how we adapt our environments to our needs and how this can be harmful if it is not done sustainability.  Research interests included: dams, cities, landfills and transport.
PYP 7 Omega - Davi, Lucas and Thierry test the roof on the tropical shelter.

In PYP 7 O, students did research on shelters throughout different regions in groups and presented their non-chronological reports. And in the spirit of going further, student chose an element of the unit which they wanted to investigate further, and carried out their inquiry. They also used easybib to document their sources.

In PYP 7 S, students wrote a non-chronological report based on their individual interests, within the context of the central idea, using easybib to cite their resources. They applied their understanding of the central idea and lines of inquiry while going further.

In Maths, we continued to work on mental Maths, and the four operations.

This week is a short week and it will be dedicated to our summative together with the start of our final Unit of inquiry. Students will be asking for your support during this unit, so be prepared to explore your family histories together.

Climate Zones

Highlights from Week 5

Welcome back!

Last week might have been a short one but that didn’t stop PYP 7 from getting a lot done! We had time to collaborate during research on shelters in different regions throughout the world, and apply reading strategies to learn even more about climatic and geographical features of the different climate zones. And students also did the SATS!

In Unit of inquiry, we deepened our understanding of Lines of inquiry 1 and 2.

  • The range of geographical and climatic conditions and their causes.
  • How humans have adapted and settled in different environments.

Students worked in small groups based on interest to research about different shelters throughout the polar, temperate, and tropical regions. They used the key concepts: connection and form to create research questions, they created their own graphic organizers on Google docs to record their research findings, and they explored a variety of sources. Students worked on acquiring facts and applying their understanding of climatic and geographic conditions as well the features of a non-chronological report while looking for information. There was a lot of excitement in class as students discovered new facts! Comparisons were made between shelters too.

The next phase will be to write a non-chronological report using the facts they found and to bring in materials to build the shelters.

PYP 7 B also got involved in the PYP 8 Exhibition and watched a presentation on the importance of Bees and even planted flowers.

An overview of Week 4

A bit of this, a bit of that...

The student led conferences were a great success! Our students demonstrated confidence, passion and a lot of learning. We were very happy with the feedback and your continued support. If you would like to revisit your child’s script or targets, everything will be uploaded onto the e-portfolios in the coming weeks. Additionally, Unit folders will be made available on Monday April 10, 2017.
Please remember to fill in the 2 stars and a wish reflection.

We’d like to say...Way to go PYP 7!

The rest of the week involved a lot of catching up in all areas of the curriculum and moving around.

PYP 7 S adapting to their new classroom.

In Unit, students continued to build on their understanding of the features of maps as well as their thinking and research skills as they began their research into shelters throughout the different climate zones.

PYP 7 B using their knowledge of landforms to paint with watercolours.

In Language, we worked on reading comprehension skills while we unpacked the features of non-chronological reports and building cohesion throughout paragraphs. This week we hope to combine our research about shelters and our understanding of non-chronological reports to build a shared writing text.

In Maths, we assessed multiplication, adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, and converting between percentages, decimals and fractions.

Week 3 Student Led Conference

Preparing for our student led conferences

Last week, students spent time reflecting on the many areas of the PYP curriculum to prepare for the student led conference. Not only did they independently identify their strengths and weaknesses in Language, Unit of Inquiry, Maths, and Portuguese, but they also reflected on the learner profile attributes and the transdisciplinary skills. A lot of hard work and revising (and more revising) went into their reflections!

They wrote scripts, selected pieces of work to share with you, conferenced with their teachers, decided on where they were on the continuums, and presented to fellow classmates in preparation for the conference. Student led is really student led!

We hope that the conference will give you more insight into the learning that occurs in PYP 7 as well as an opportunity to provide feedback to your child as you work together to create targets for the rest of the term.

PYP 7 B practicing with their peers.

This is your child’s chance to shine! Ask them questions and celebrate together!

Week 2 - climatic and geographical features

A Summary of Week 2

Last week students had an opportunity to investigate into the 3 major climate zones: polar, temperate and tropical with specific focus on sunlight, temperature, humidity, rain and wind in each region. Students worked together in small groups as they discussed and evaluated useful facts that would help them understand how these climate factors influence and behave in each zone. A lot of research was involved and a lot of questions were asked!

Students in PYP 7 B investigating into the polar zone.

We moved on to major landforms and worked in large group to describe, represent, and discover how they were formed. We also found numerous interesting facts about landforms around the world. This engagement helped us reflect on our research skills and to think about our strengths and weaknesses as a group as well as individually.

In Maths, we worked on data handling with specific focus on plotting and interpreting various graphs. Students also had opportunities to practice their mental Maths skills.

This week, PYP 7 will be preparing for the student led conference and inquiring further into climatic and geographical conditions.
