Our week’s learning - starting Monday 17th October, 2016

Assembly time for PYP7 Beta

Language -

We have been building up to creating poetry this week, with classes examining imagery through literary devices. These devices have included rhyme, alliteration, hyperbole and personification. Once finished, the poems will take on the form of their subject - this is called concrete poetry.

Maths -

Fractions were the order of the week. With classes coming to understand the ordering of fractions, along with equivalent fractions. Once these skills have been solidified, classes will move on to the decimal equivalents of fractions.

Unit -

As part of our Unit of Inquiry, we have been examining reversible and irreversible changes. This is a fascinating subject, with classes exploring solutions and how solids and liquids mix. We also had a look back at our pottery demonstration we saw while on our Peraltas trip.

Art -

All three classes were lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit the 32nd Bienal of Sao Paulo. Each class had their own guide, who took us on a personalised tour, inviting us to have our own reactions to the pieces of art and to consider the materials the artist used to create their piece.

This week will see the end of Unit 2 - which means we will be wrapping up our inquiry cycle. Assessment makes up a big part of this stage of our learning. To learn a little more about assessment in the PYP - check out his short presentation: Assessment in the PYP

Baking experiment

Week starting Monday 3rd October, 2016

In Art lessons for the week, the three classes of PYP7 were treated to a demonstration by Mr Concagh. He showed us how to construct moulds out of clay and then filled them with various materials. This led to the students to think about items they can construct around the classroom from a mould. We made links to our Unit of Inquiry by considering the materials we want to use in designs and whether the properties of that material are suitable.

In language we are continuing our look at punctuation and paragraph structure, in particular topic sentences.

In Maths, PYP7 is moving from division to ordering fractions and equivalent fractions.

In Unit of Inquiry we were treated to another demonstration - this time from parent, Mr Bell. He treated the classes to a demonstration of processes involved in dairy production. He showed a range of experiments to the students, showing chemical and physical changes of milk.

In Maths, we have focused on division with remainders using two methods - chunking and bus stop. See the video below for a demonstration of chunking!

Unit has been exciting last week, with students investigating where materials come from, their properties, and which kingdom they belong to: animal, vegetable or mineral. We finished our short week by completing an ice experiment. Students insulated their cubes using a variety of materials. See pictures for some of the results!
