Unit of Inquiry

Our week of learning - PYP7

Another week of learning has been completed, full of meaningful inquiry.

Maths this week saw Omega and Sigma classes host the Mexican Exchange students. We introduced aspects of our Unit of Inquiry and looked at sales figures for weapons around the world. Using our excellent written maths skills, we were able to look at and compare sales between countries and see how much countries spend on weapons and how much it would cost for an aircraft carrier and fighter jets!

In Language, we have been looking at settings and making a start on writing play scripts. This is a useful skill, with two PYP7 assemblies coming up - Beta and Omega!

Our Unit of Inquiry into conflict has centred around research this week, with each class looking at examples of conflicts that interest us and examining the cause of the conflicts. We are also working towards real action to resolve conflict at St. Francis, with each class beginning to examine what types of conflicts are present in our school.

This week we have Parent Teacher Meeting. Please remember to book a time with your child's teacher through youcanbookme.

Our language learning last week centred around the genre of recount texts: A Recount is a text which retells events or experiences in the past. Its purpose is either to inform or to entertain the audience. We used images of conflict for inspiration and we were able to use our imaginations to retell events.

In Maths, we have been completing our statistics learning, with data being presented and read in a variety of ways.

Our classroom inquiry into conflict has continued strongly this past week. We have examined types of conflict, with Rwanda and Apartheid in South Africa being our focus. We have also used well-known fairy tales as a way of examining the needs and wants of people in conflict.

A major component for this unit is the skill of conflict resolution - a useful skill we carry with us our whole lives. This skill will be developed as we move our way through the unit, and referenced for the remainder of PYP7.
