Week 3 Student Led Conference
Preparing for our student led conferences
Last week, students spent time reflecting on the many areas of the PYP curriculum to prepare for the student led conference. Not only did they independently identify their strengths and weaknesses in Language, Unit of Inquiry, Maths, and Portuguese, but they also reflected on the learner profile attributes and the transdisciplinary skills. A lot of hard work and revising (and more revising) went into their reflections!
They wrote scripts, selected pieces of work to share with you, conferenced with their teachers, decided on where they were on the continuums, and presented to fellow classmates in preparation for the conference. Student led is really student led!
We hope that the conference will give you more insight into the learning that occurs in PYP 7 as well as an opportunity to provide feedback to your child as you work together to create targets for the rest of the term.

Week 2 - climatic and geographical features
A Summary of Week 2
Last week students had an opportunity to investigate into the 3 major climate zones: polar, temperate and tropical with specific focus on sunlight, temperature, humidity, rain and wind in each region. Students worked together in small groups as they discussed and evaluated useful facts that would help them understand how these climate factors influence and behave in each zone. A lot of research was involved and a lot of questions were asked!

We moved on to major landforms and worked in large group to describe, represent, and discover how they were formed. We also found numerous interesting facts about landforms around the world. This engagement helped us reflect on our research skills and to think about our strengths and weaknesses as a group as well as individually.
In Maths, we worked on data handling with specific focus on plotting and interpreting various graphs. Students also had opportunities to practice their mental Maths skills.

This week's homework
Unit 5
PYP 7 begins a new Unit of inquiry
Central idea:
Humans have adapted to a wide range of climatic and geographical conditions in order to survive.
Lines of inquiry:
• The range of geographical and climatic conditions and their causes.
• How humans have adapted and settled in different environments.
• How human development affects the environment
Last week we introduced our new central idea and lines of inquiry. We began with a lively provocation where students had an opportunity to research about an extreme climate and come up with a list of 5 items that they would need if they were to go there. This provocation stimulated a lot of conversation connected to our central idea and lead to several meaningful questions that we will use throughout the coming weeks. We then moved to unpacking the concept of adaptation and students shared their prior knowledge, opinions and ideas. We were amazed with their awareness and experience with the concept. Later on in the week, we began investigating features of maps together with climate zones. This week students will continue to investigate into climatic factors that occur in different climate zones.

In Language, students wrote texts of their choice that were linked to the central idea. They experimented with Haiku poetry and developing their settings, expanded noun phrases and prefixes. Students continue to work on their stamina when writing, their ability to edit texts independently, and their own personal targets.
Last week was fulfilling and rich with learning opportunities. Way to go PYP 7!
Keep on asking those questions!
