Climate Zones

Highlights from Week 5

Welcome back!

Last week might have been a short one but that didn’t stop PYP 7 from getting a lot done! We had time to collaborate during research on shelters in different regions throughout the world, and apply reading strategies to learn even more about climatic and geographical features of the different climate zones. And students also did the SATS!

In Unit of inquiry, we deepened our understanding of Lines of inquiry 1 and 2.

  • The range of geographical and climatic conditions and their causes.
  • How humans have adapted and settled in different environments.

Students worked in small groups based on interest to research about different shelters throughout the polar, temperate, and tropical regions. They used the key concepts: connection and form to create research questions, they created their own graphic organizers on Google docs to record their research findings, and they explored a variety of sources. Students worked on acquiring facts and applying their understanding of climatic and geographic conditions as well the features of a non-chronological report while looking for information. There was a lot of excitement in class as students discovered new facts! Comparisons were made between shelters too.

The next phase will be to write a non-chronological report using the facts they found and to bring in materials to build the shelters.

PYP 7 B also got involved in the PYP 8 Exhibition and watched a presentation on the importance of Bees and even planted flowers.

An overview of Week 4

A bit of this, a bit of that...

The student led conferences were a great success! Our students demonstrated confidence, passion and a lot of learning. We were very happy with the feedback and your continued support. If you would like to revisit your child’s script or targets, everything will be uploaded onto the e-portfolios in the coming weeks. Additionally, Unit folders will be made available on Monday April 10, 2017.
Please remember to fill in the 2 stars and a wish reflection.

We’d like to say...Way to go PYP 7!

The rest of the week involved a lot of catching up in all areas of the curriculum and moving around.

PYP 7 S adapting to their new classroom.

In Unit, students continued to build on their understanding of the features of maps as well as their thinking and research skills as they began their research into shelters throughout the different climate zones.

PYP 7 B using their knowledge of landforms to paint with watercolours.

In Language, we worked on reading comprehension skills while we unpacked the features of non-chronological reports and building cohesion throughout paragraphs. This week we hope to combine our research about shelters and our understanding of non-chronological reports to build a shared writing text.

In Maths, we assessed multiplication, adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, and converting between percentages, decimals and fractions.

This week’s reminders:
We begin SATS this week.
Thursday is a half day for students.

Week 3 Student Led Conference

Preparing for our student led conferences

Last week, students spent time reflecting on the many areas of the PYP curriculum to prepare for the student led conference. Not only did they independently identify their strengths and weaknesses in Language, Unit of Inquiry, Maths, and Portuguese, but they also reflected on the learner profile attributes and the transdisciplinary skills. A lot of hard work and revising (and more revising) went into their reflections!

They wrote scripts, selected pieces of work to share with you, conferenced with their teachers, decided on where they were on the continuums, and presented to fellow classmates in preparation for the conference. Student led is really student led!

We hope that the conference will give you more insight into the learning that occurs in PYP 7 as well as an opportunity to provide feedback to your child as you work together to create targets for the rest of the term.

PYP 7 B practicing with their peers.

This is your child’s chance to shine! Ask them questions and celebrate together!
Way to go PYP 7!
