Week 6

Going further and making conclusions together!

Last week students were in the going further and making conclusions phases of the inquiry cycle. Here’s a little explanation about the happenings in each class.

In PYP 7 B, students used their research to create non-chronological texts and actual models of a Bedouin shelter in the Sahara desert, an igloo in the Arctic zone, a traditional home in Norway, and finally an earthquake proof building in Japan. Check out our pictures!

We also had an opportunity to carry out investigations related to our third line of inquiry: How human development affects the environment.  As students presented their research, they began to make conclusions regarding how we adapt our environments to our needs and how this can be harmful if it is not done sustainability.  Research interests included: dams, cities, landfills and transport.
PYP 7 Omega - Davi, Lucas and Thierry test the roof on the tropical shelter.

In PYP 7 O, students did research on shelters throughout different regions in groups and presented their non-chronological reports. And in the spirit of going further, student chose an element of the unit which they wanted to investigate further, and carried out their inquiry. They also used easybib to document their sources.

In PYP 7 S, students wrote a non-chronological report based on their individual interests, within the context of the central idea, using easybib to cite their resources. They applied their understanding of the central idea and lines of inquiry while going further.

In Maths, we continued to work on mental Maths, and the four operations.

This week is a short week and it will be dedicated to our summative together with the start of our final Unit of inquiry. Students will be asking for your support during this unit, so be prepared to explore your family histories together.

Highlights from Week 5

Welcome back!

Last week might have been a short one but that didn’t stop PYP 7 from getting a lot done! We had time to collaborate during research on shelters in different regions throughout the world, and apply reading strategies to learn even more about climatic and geographical features of the different climate zones. And students also did the SATS!

In Unit of inquiry, we deepened our understanding of Lines of inquiry 1 and 2.

  • The range of geographical and climatic conditions and their causes.
  • How humans have adapted and settled in different environments.

Students worked in small groups based on interest to research about different shelters throughout the polar, temperate, and tropical regions. They used the key concepts: connection and form to create research questions, they created their own graphic organizers on Google docs to record their research findings, and they explored a variety of sources. Students worked on acquiring facts and applying their understanding of climatic and geographic conditions as well the features of a non-chronological report while looking for information. There was a lot of excitement in class as students discovered new facts! Comparisons were made between shelters too.

The next phase will be to write a non-chronological report using the facts they found and to bring in materials to build the shelters.

PYP 7 B also got involved in the PYP 8 Exhibition and watched a presentation on the importance of Bees and even planted flowers.
