Final week of Unit 1

Unit 1 was wrapped up last week and PYP7 was a flurry of activity.

In Language lessons, we have been creating our own creation stories and these have now been published, ready for some to revealed to the public on the Peraltas trip!

In Maths, lessons have been focused on finding area and perimeter of shapes.

Our PYP7 countries have been challenged with a series of events last week! First an earthquake shook the region, causing our governments to meet for emergency summits. This was followed by a refugee crisis, only to then have a disaster fall upon our countries’ leaders. What a week! These events tested the cooperation of all students and required a clear vision of power and hierarchy.

Coming up this week... Peraltas of course!

Stay tuned for more information.

Homework - Week of Monday 12th September, 2016.

Language - Summarising

Maths - Measuring and classifying angles

Unit of Inquiry

Building our own country!

Unit

This week the classes of PYP7 have been developing the identity and first official documents of their countries.

In creating an identity for their country, the students have gained an understanding that traits like symbols, mottos and aspects of culture affect how the country is perceived by others.

Official constitutions have also been drawn up, with groups recording the rights and freedoms of its citizens and significant laws of their countries. In doing so, the groups have needed to consider how these laws came into effect, with some countries showing understanding of checks and balances and others showing outright autocracy!

Maths

This week has been all about angles – with PYP7 students using protractors to measure and classify angles. Next week continues our study of geometry - we will examine area and perimeter.

Language

Now that creation stories from around the world have been examined and students have identified common features – we are now going through the writing process of writing our own (based on our own invented countries!), with an emphasis on the editing phase.

Going Further in our Unit of Inquiry

Going Further in our Unit of Inquiry
inquiry-cycle-black-and-white.png
Having spent the last couple weeks working through the initial stages of the Cycle of Inquiry, pupils were given the opportunity of going further in their inquiry. This is the stage of the inquiry where pupils independently apply the research skills which they have been modeled and guided through in the finding out stage.

Having become familiar with using the chosen key concepts for this unit (form, function and responsibility) to build their questions upon, the children set off investigating how the central idea applies to societies which had not yet been researched. Pupils choose modern indigenous societies or historical civilisations and applied their inquiry skills to discover how these societies organised themselves.

Central Idea: The way societies organize themselves can affect people in different ways.
Lines of Inquiry:
  • How different government systems are organized.
  • How decisions are made in different societies.
  • The relationship between government and citizens

Having assessed the validity and usefulness of sites using the Website Rating template, pupils then used their summarising skills, which they have developed in language lessons (finding the GIST), to record their findings.

Pupils showed impressive organisational skills to structure their inquiry but found the most challenging aspect finding the appropriate information to answer their questions.
Also as part of going further, the pupils could let loose their imagination as part of a big group project Building Your Own Country. This will be a wonderful opportunity for parents to engage with the children's understanding of the unit so far, as the children will undoubtedly want to tell you all about the new country. Expect the unexpected.

We would also like to thank all the parents who came support their children on setting out to achieve their targets during the Goal Setting Meetings held last week. It was great to see many of the children already setting out independently to get to work on their targets the following day. Handwriting cards were been requested, extra care was being made with sentences and the general focus on our learning was definitely cranked up a level. Please keep supporting and checking up to ensure those targets are being followed.
